UEFA investigates racist insults to Ibrahimovic

The UEFA has opened a disciplinary investigation after Zlatan
Ibrahimovic, ram of the Milan, was subjected to racist abuse in last week’s Europa League game against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia, the European soccer governing body said on Wednesday.

Serbian media reported that Ibrahimovic, who has Bosnian roots, was insulted by an individual sitting in the VIP box at Red Star Stadium during the match played on February 18. “An ethics and discipline inspector has been appointed today to carry out a disciplinary investigation into the incidents that occurred during the UEFA Europa League round of 32 game,” UEFA said in a statement.

No fans attended the game due to COVID-19 restrictions and Ibrahimovic was sitting in the west stand of the stadium, behind the benches along with other substitutes and Milan staff.

The Red Star apologized to Ibrahimovic in a statement last week and said they would work with authorities to identify the offender. The Red Star drew 2-2 with Milan in the first leg of the round of 32 clash, with Ibrahimovic as a substitute.
