The disappointing year of the American Sofia kenin, world No. 6 and champion of Australian Open’2020, hit another low point after being eliminated in the second round in Wimbledon for Madison brengle, 6-2, 6-4.
Kenin struggled with his serve and made 41 unforced errors for just seven for his compatriot. Kenin won the Australian Open last year and reached the final of Roland Garros, edition disputed last October due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, this season he has a balance of 11 wins and 10 losses. He lost in the second round of a Grand slam for the fifth time in his career. Brengle, who saved four match points in the first round, beat a top-10 tennis player for the first time in more than four years.
At his subsequent press conference, Kenin announced his resignation from the Tokyo Olympics, joining a list of illustrious casualties led by Rafa Nadal, Serena Williams, Simona Halep and Dominic Thiem.
