Tennis: Medvedev, to eighth of Miami after needing three sets against Popyrin

Russian Daniil Medvedev, number two in the world, imposed his status as the main favorite of the Miami Masters 1,000 and won with difficulties and in three sets (7-6 (3), 6-7 (7) and 6-4) to the Australian Alexei popyrin to reach the knockout stages.

The Muscovite, who with the title achieved weeks ago in Marseille raised the titles of his history to ten, took two hours and thirty-nine minutes to overcome the Australian who kept the type until the end.

Popyrin, winner this year in Singapore, where he inaugurated his record, 86 in the world and debutant in the main draw of the tournament, seriously jeopardized Medvedev’s continuity in the competition.

The Russian, who had already beaten the Australian in the two matches they had previously played, had three match points in the second set. He could not win on the fast track. His rival took the game to the final sleeve where he imposed his status as favorite to close the victory.

Medvedev, who was also a finalist in the Australian Open this 2021, his second attempt to win a Grand Slam after that of 2019 in the United States, faces his third participation in Miami. He never made it past the round of 16, where he is again after beating Popyrin.

Daniil Medvedev will seek the quarterfinals against the winner between American Francis Tiafoe and Serbian Dusan Lajovic.

The twenty-first seeded Italian Jannik Sinner also passed the third round, who needed three sets to get out of the duel with Russia’s Karen Khachanov (4-6, 7-6 (2) and 6-4).
