The American Serena Williams, ninth in the WTA ranking, defeated her compatriot Bernarda Pera (60th), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the WTA tournament in Lexington (Kentucky), whose edition a Closed door marks the return of tennis to the United States despite the coronavirus pandemic.
It was not an easy return. Defeated in the first set (4-6), Serena had to overcome four break points in the second set in four different games (6-4) to end up leveling the match and sentence more easily in the third set (6-1 ).
Serena Williams, who was playing her first official match since a Federation Cup tie in February against Latvia, will face her sister Venus or Belarusian Victoria Azarenka in the next round.
The Lexington tournament will allow players to prepare for the US Open, which should take place from August 31 to September 13.
