Chelsea has lifted the second Champions League in its history this Saturday, the seventh European title of its record. Since, previously, in addition to the first Champions League, the ‘blue’ team won two Recopas (the first of them no less than against Real Madrid led by Miguel Muñoz, with Gento, Amancio, Pirri or Zoco), a Super Cup of Europe and two Europa Leagues.
The ‘blues’ made their debut at the level of continental trophies, winning a Recopa in 1970-71 (2-1 in the playoff game against Real Madrid in Piraeus, after 1-1 in the first match). Ignacio Zoco forced a tiebreaker to tie at 90 ‘after Peter Osgood’s goal at 56’). And in the aforementioned tiebreaker, John Dempsey and Osgood decided for Chelsea. Sebastián Fleitas cut for Real Madrid,
Chelsea had to wait 27 years to win a European title again: they repeated Recopa in 1997-98 (after beating Stuttgart 1-0 in Stockholm with a goal from a myth at Stamford Bridge like Gianfranco Zola).
This second Recopa was followed by the European Super Cup also in 1998 and, as in the 1970-71 final, the rival that Chelsea beat was Real Madrid (1-0 in Monaco, both by Gustavo Poyet). The whites had just won the Seventh 0-1 against Juventus, their first Champions League since 1965-66.
Then came the first Champions League for Chelsea, the one they won in 2011-12 on penalties against Bayern at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Next, two Europa Leagues: 2012-13 with Rafa Benítez as coach (1-2 against Benfica, goals from Fernando Torres and Branislav Ivanovic) and 2018-19 with Maurizio Sarri as coach (4-1 against Arsenal led by Unai Emery, double by Eden Hazard, two goals by Olivier Giroud and Pedro; for the ‘gunners’, Alex Iwobi).
And this May 29, 2021, the second Champions League.
