The American Joe Roberts (Kalex) defeated the Australian Remy gardner (Kalex) at the end of the first free practice session for the Moto2 Italian Grand Prix in the circuit of Mugello, in which Raul Fernandez (Kalex) was the best Spaniard in fourth place.
Precisely Raúl Fernández was the first “solvent” leader in the category when he was already on his fourth lap with a time of 1: 52.946, just twenty thousandths of a second faster than the German Marcel Schrotter (Kalex), although both were surpassed by Italians Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio di Giannantonio, both on Kalex motorcycles.
Logically, the Italian pilots seek to be “prophets in their land” in a circuit in which they always have a special role, although glued to them were all the favorites of the category such as the British Sam Lowes (Kalex), the Australian Remy Gardner ( Kalex), world leader, or the Spanish Augusto Fernandez (Kalex) and Xavier Vierge (Kalex).
Precisely Sam Lowes was the next leader in the timesheets, achieving a record of 1: 52.295 on his tenth lap, which lowered Marco Bezzecchi’s previous time by more than three tenths of a second, and even lowered it a few tenths more when achieving roll at 1: 52.004 on the next lap.
The session had entered its last ten minutes and that was noticeable on the track because after the pertinent tire change some drivers already went out to look for a good personal best, as in the case of Remy Gardner, who was the first to break the barrier of the 52 seconds when rolling in 1: 51.984, which was a few thousandths of the race record, set in 2019 by the Spanish Alex Márquez (Estrella Galicia 0’0 Kalex) in 1: 51.881.
American Joe Roberts was the final leader of the session by shooting 1: 51.746, which was already below Gardner’s record, which gave him the provisional first position in the category, ahead of Gardner, Lowes and Raúl Fernández.
