Pol Espargaro faces this weekend in Qatar his second career with the team Repsol Honda (Doha GP) after finishing in eighth position on his debut with the HRC in the same layout of Losail. The Catalan pilot was the best positioned of the four pilots of the signature of the golden wing, ahead of his companion Stefan bradl (substitute for Marc Márquez as long as the one from Cervera does not return), which was 11th, while the two riders of the satellite team (LCR Honda Team), Àlex Márquez and Nakagami, they went to the ground. The one from Granollers fulfilled the main objective set for him by the team, to finish the race to continue adding laps to join his new machine. And furthermore, the Team Manager of the Repsol Honda, Alberto Puig, ended up satisfied with his performance in his first race with the team, at the Qatar GP. Now, a few days later, with many lessons learned that will help him improve, Pol faces the weekend with the goal of “taking another step this week”.
“We are preparing to compete again. Last week we got off to a positive start, but this is not the position we should be fighting for ”, he commented Espargaró in a team community, showing his desire to progress in his final race position compared to his eighth place last Sunday.
“The goal is to go one step further this week and now that I have done a race, I feel much more prepared and have a clearer idea of what to expect.”, he expressed. And in that sense, the fact of competing on the same track where the pre-season official tests and the first race of the course were already held, will help him to understand his new ‘toy’ even more.
“During the race we could see our strengths and also our weaknesses. We still have to work in qualifying to be further ahead on the grid and have a better chance of making a clean first lap. The journey has just begun and now is the time to pick up the pace ”, he expressed.
“Another week in Qatar, something that, after last year, it is quite normal to have two races at the same circuit. Qualifying will definitely be an important area to focus on alongside the normal jobs of a racing weekend. If we can put together a solid weekend, the top ten are within our grasp. Now that all the drivers have been training for so long on this track, it won’t be easy, but we know our potential. I don’t want to leave anything on the table for this second race ”.
