Luca de Meo, Managing Director of the Renault Group, made it clear in statements collected by ‘Motorsport.com’ that Alpine, team in which he drives Fernando Alonso on his return to the F1, has its great goal in 2022, a course in which it wants to aspire to fight for everything taking advantage of the enormous change in regulations that will be implemented next year. In that sense, he stressed that he will not fight for triumphs this year, although this does not mean that they are going to throw this course overboard.
“You can’t expect us to dominate. We are also very focused on 2022, so we have decided to stop development, especially of the engine. For us, the real big challenge will start in 2022. But of course we don’t want 2021 to be a shitty season, ”he commented, assuring that the goal is to keep progressing and fight to lead the midfield after Renault finished in the 5th position in 2020.
“And also because we have Fernando (Alonso). With Fernando, who wants to win all the time, and Esteban (Ocon) who is young and needs to show himself and cannot miss this moment … They both have great motivation. And we have to give the drivers a good service as a team. We are there to work and we will see how we can improve race after race. And let’s see what happens. Because the others are also getting stronger “
