“Today is a very nice day for me. I am very happy to be able to continue for another three years at Athletic. It took me a lot to get here, but the hard road I have traveled has been worth it ”.
The news advanced hours before Athletic-Barça last Sunday in San Mamés acquired the rank of official early yesterday afternoon. The Bilbao club communicated on its website the renewal agreement reached with Mikel Vesga. Agreement that was also recorded graphically in different photographs taken in Ibaigane with the player posing with the red-and-white jersey and the 2024 number and with the president, Aitor Elizegi, and the sports director, Rafa Alkorta.
The 27-year-old midfielder from Gasteiz assured that there had been no major problem between the parties for the final handshake. “It was clear that I was in no rush because my intention was to stay here. Athletic and I had been talking about the matter for some time and it was easy to reach an agreement given their interest in my continuing. It gives you security knowing that the club is counting on you “, Vesga himself explained in a telematic press conference.
Some of the last players renewed by the rojiblanco club agreed that their new contract did not include any termination clause. In the case of Vesga, however, a clause of 50 million euros is established. The footballer from Gasteiz did not want to go into further details about it.
“It is something to which I do not give the value or the importance that perhaps the number can mean for you. I am clear that I want to end my contract here”Argued Vesga. Then, at another point in his speech, he remarked that “the clause is secondary, it is not important. We could reach an agreement at any time ”.
The recent change of coach carried out at Athletic was, logically, another of the issues addressed by the Alava midfielder. Midfielder who attributed this circumstance to the things of this sport.
“This happens in football. A shame because Gaizka (Garitano) is one of us. In the dressing room we have felt it. Changes of this type are not easy. Now Marcelino has arrived, with other ideas, and let’s hope things get better ”, argued the rojiblanco.
This was not, in any case, the only time that Vesga had to respond to this type of question related to the tenant of the bench. “Gaizka has been an important coach for me. Although it will be difficult for me to enter into his plans, he gave me confidence and opportunities. We know how this club feels, how they took the team and how they left it. What they have done for this club, both he and his assistants, is very very good. We hope that these last decisions are to improve, so that the team continues to grow ”.
Vesga believes that Marcelino’s style will suit Athletic very well. “Against Barça you could already see some brushstrokes, especially in the first minutes of each half. I have the feeling that we are going to adapt well and quickly ”.
Vesga also clarified that the new coach had nothing to do with his renewal. “We had been talking for weeks before Marcelino arrived. There could be other options beyond Athletic, but what I wanted was to continue here. My mind, in fact, has been here at all times.
