Guardiola: ‘We are sad but there is nothing to reproach’

Pep Guardiola failed to win the Champions League for the third time in his coaching career but was satisfied with the performance of the Manchester City players against a Chelsea that took the title in Porto.

“It has been an excellent season, exceptional I would say, but we are sad, we have to learn from this. We have given everything and we have not been able to win, but we will come back stronger ”, Guardiola began. “We competed incredibly well, it was the first time we got here and we congratulated Chelsea.”

Guardiola considers that “the game has been very even” and, despite admitting that “we could do better in the first half”, he stressed that “in the second they have not left the area”. Santpedor’s coach concluded that “it’s Chelsea, we can’t create more chances. Is not easy. To be the first final, we played a good game. We showed a lot of courage and we gave it our all. I am going to congratulate you for the great season and for the great game we played. I’m left with sadness but I have few regrets ”.

Regarding his decision to leave a defensive midfielder like Fernandinho and Rodri out of the starting lineup, Guardiola pointed out “as against Lyon, against Dortmund, PSG … It was difficult for us to break lines in the first half, in the second we were better. You need inspiration and the moments we get closer we don’t get the goal. We deserved to score, but we couldn’t ”,

Asked about the fact that the Champions League continues to resist him ten years after winning it for the second time with Barça, Guardiola assured that “it is a very difficult competition to win. There are wonderful teams that have been playing it for 60 years and have only won it four or five times. It is a dream for us to be here even if we don’t win ”.
