Beñat Lavín will be the new coach of Bilbao Rugby University for next season. The current sports director of the club, a position that from now on will combine with the bench, picks up the witness left by the tandem formed by Fede Sánchez and Miguel Torrontegi, that before the interruption of the competition due to the COVID-19 had already certified the permanence of the team in the Honor Division B after his return last summer to the state silver category.

It was already very difficult for me to reconcile it with my work ”, he recognized MD Own Fede Sánchez, who added: “Also, I like cycles of two or three years at most.”

And, to tell the truth, the two stages in which he has practiced as a coach of the University Bilbao have lasted two seasons each. Always linked to this entity, since his time as a player of the University XV before its merger with the Bilbao, Sanchez does not close the door to a possible return to the bench in the future: “We are people of the house. If they need us someday, we’ll be there. ”

Degree in Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport, Algorta’s, despite his youth (28 years), has a long history in the sport of oval ball, which he began to practice as a child in the Getxo, team with which he came to compete in Honor Division. He has also been international under-18 and under-19 with the Spanish team. At the beginning of this truncated 2019-20 campaign, he was appointed by the board of the UBR to serve as sports director of the club.
The announcement of the incorporation of Lavin The bench has taken place within the framework of a presentation by those who will command the technical staff of the UBR on their different computers. Thus, there will also be news in the ‘Barbarians’, set B in the senior men’s category. Mikel Palomero will replace Unai Zuazola, who has directed the squad to the Basque First League and will now go to take over the sub-18. For his part, Eneko Carlón will continue for the third consecutive year at the head of the women’s table.
