Badosa: ‘Now my expectations are real’

The Spanish Paula Badosa got this Sunday the pass to the second round of Roland Garros, the same tournament where last fall his career took a leap after reaching the round of 16 and was in line with the expectations he had raised when he won the junior edition in 2015.

Then, his name began to sound like one of the promises of the circuit, but his mind was not able to respond to so much pressure and his results plummeted. He changed his environment, coach and mentality and over the years he became more solid, able to face what his tennis promised.

After defeating the American in the first round of Roland Garros Lauren davis by 6-2 and 7-6 (3), Badosa reflected on this new stage. “Before I had expectations but they weren’t real. Now it is different, now they are being more reality, I’m starting to show that I can do good results in tournaments, I am showing myself that I am capable of reaching “, he assured.

“I enjoy it more because it is something that I have earned, I hadn’t done anything special before to get so much talk about me being so young. It is the difference for how I carry the expectations ”, indicated the Spanish born in New York.

That difference is noticeable in their game and also in the results, because last year’s eighth-finalist returns with the Belgrade tournament under her arm. In addition, for the first time he faces the tournament as the top seed, the 33rd, which can help pave his way.

Badosa discovers a new dimension, his name weighs on the circuit and his press conferences are filled with journalists from all corners, but he has learned that pressure does not become a slab but a springboard.

“If the press is watching me, it is a good thing. Before I took it more with pressure and now I have learned to turn it around and see it as positive, “he said.

His face overflows with happiness and calm and you can see that he likes to regain contact with the clay of Paris. “It is a very special tournament, I have good memories, I feel good here. The feelings are good, the conditions change depending on the time, but I have adapted well and hopefully I will be there for many more days, ”says the 23-year-old.

Against Davis, 86 in the world at 27 years old, Badosa was forceful in his reunion with a tournament in which in the last edition he made a leap in quality, reaching the round of 16.

In the first round, after 2-2, the Spanish played six consecutive games, to sign up for the set and enter the next one with dominance.

Although Davis equaled 2 and the duel was balanced, to be resolved in a playoff game that fell on the side of the Spanish.

Now she will have to face the Montenegrin Danka Kovinic, 62 of the world of 26 years, who beat the French Clara Burel, invited by the organizers, 6-3 and 7-6 (3).
