The Spanish Fernando Alonso (Alpine), double world champion of Formula One, declared this Thursday in the Red bull ring, headquarters of Austrian F1 Grand Prix 2021, that “last weekend”, that of the Grand Prix of Styria, in the same scenario, was “tough, in competitive terms” and that they will try to “raise the level” this one.
“Last weekend was tough in competitive terms and we have to raise the level. They change the tires (which will be softer) and we are also expecting a change in the weather that could help us.; because this track does not suit us too well, “said Alonso at his press conference this Thursday at the Spielberg circuit, where, after finishing ninth last Sunday in the Styrian Grand Prix, he will compete again this weekend, in that of Austria.
Alonso, 39, who after two years away from her returned to Formula One this year – with the team with which he celebrated his two titles (2005 and 2006) -, has 32 victories and 97 podiums in the premier category, in the one who claims to have fun since his return; and also declared to be amused by the fact that there are going to be two races in a row on the same stage.
“It amuses me, not just the fact that there are two races in a row. Actually there are three, because last Sunday we raced in France, too. I think it’s good for racing.”, said Alonso.
“On Monday and Tuesday we stayed here and slept in the ‘motorhome’ and in the ‘paddock'”Fernando explained when asked about the past days at his press conference, in which he appeared alongside the World Cup leader, the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who reminded him, humorously, that he had run ” against Jos “, his father.
When asked about his first memory of Formula One, the Spaniard explained that he remembered that when he was little, his parents (José Luis and Ana) had gone to the Jerez circuit.
“I remember that my parents went to Jerez and that they came back with photos of that weekend, that I stayed with my grandmother; that may be my first memory related to F1”, said Alonso, who has recovered the habit of going around the track on foot with his engineers and trusted people.
“We did it in Baku, in France and also here. And as we score points, we continue to do so. For no specific reason, rather for a matter of superstition”, said the Asturian genius about the ‘track walk’.
In addition, the Oviedo stressed that this World Cup is more exciting than the previous ones.
“Before it was Lewis (Hamilton) against Lewis; or sometimes, for a while, against (his Finnish partner Valtteri) Bottas. Now it is against Max; and there is a bit more adrenaline.”, he stated.
“Max is the leader now; but things can change; we will follow him, this confrontation, from a distance”Alonso declared this Thursday in Austria.
