He Bragantino ran over this Wednesday Sao Paulo, leader of the Brazilian Championship, with a 4-2 home victory, while the Flamengo missed the opportunity to get close to the leader by losing to the Fluminense in a Rio derby.
In a fast-paced match, played for the 28th round of the Brazilian league, Bragantino opened the scoring just five minutes into the game, with midfielder Claudinho. Eight minutes later, midfielder Raul increased the difference, but Sao Paulo’s discount came immediately with central Tche Tche, after receiving an assist from international full-back Dani Alves.
But the respite was short-lived. In an aerial play with defender Fabricio Bruno, the hosts scored their third goal and, a few minutes later, the attacker Artur sealed the fourth goal, which guaranteed the victory of Bragantino. In the last play before the final whistle, the paulistas managed to reduce the difference with Uruguayan Gonzalo Carneiro.
The match still saw the expulsion in the second half of Tche Tche, author of the first goal of the paulistas, for having provided a hit without the ball on the rival defender. Despite the result, Sao Paulo remains at the top of the table, with 56 points, while Bragantino is the twelfth classified with 34.
Things, on the return of Brasileirao after the end of the year break, have not gone well for Flamengo either, who lost the opportunity to close the gap with respect to the leader after 1-2 against Fluminense, in a derby played in the emblematic Maracana stadium.
Uruguayan center-back Giorigan De Arrascaeta opened the scoring in the first half and, throughout the match, both teams played dangerous plays. The spirits remained hot throughout the engagement and the tie came as soon as the second half began, with a score from defender Luccas Claro.
In the midst of multiple opportunities for both sides, Fluminense managed to reap the second goal already in added time of the second half, with a quick counterattack from central Yago Henrique. With the defeat, Flamengo remains in the third box, with the same 49 points, while Fluminense is temporarily seventh, with 43.
Gremio and Sport Recife win
Also this Wednesday, the Gremio de Porto Alegre won 2-1 at home against Bahia and temporarily entered the top four positions in the table. Sport de Recife also started 2021 with a victory, after defeating Fortaleza 1-0 at home, with a score from midfielder Thiago Neves.
Thus, the hosts temporarily occupy the fourteenth box with 32 integers, while the Fortaleza is the fifteenth, with a little less.
At the bottom of the table, Rio de Janeiro’s Botafogo sank further into the competition as they lost their strength 0-2 to Athletico Paranaense.
The cariocas thus remain in the penultimate classification, with 23 units, two more than bottom Coritiba, who confirmed their position when they were defeated 1-2 by Goias.
The twenty-eighth day of the Brazilian Championship will run until the end of January, with the following matches: Ceará-Internacional and Atlético Goianiense-Vasco da Gama, both played tomorrow, Thursday; Palmeiras-Corinthians, which will be measured on Monday, January 18, and Atlético Mineiro-Santos, which will be held next day 27.
