2-1: Vélez defeats Unión La Calera and remains one step away from qualifying

The Velez Sarsfield Argentine, ratified its second place in group G of the Libertadores Cup, after beating 2-1 at Union La Calera Chilean for the fifth and penultimate day of the continental competition.

With goals from Cristian Tarragona and Thiago Almada, the local team prevailed against a Chilean rival who converted his only goal through Jeisson Vargas.

After this triumph, Vélez remained with nine points behind the leader Flamengo, who plays tonight with Liga de Quito, while Unión La Calera remains last with two units and must wait for a combination of results to be able to aspire to qualify for the Copa Sudamericana .

Vélez had great joy after the setback last Sunday on penalties against Racing Club, which left him eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Argentine Professional Soccer League Cup.

Unión La Calera, unlike Vélez, arrived without action this weekend because he did not play for the elections that were held in that country.

The match began with pure precision for Vélez, who in the second minute created a spectacular play on the wall by Lucas Jason for Cristian Tarragona, who with a crossed shot left goalkeeper Alexis Martín Arias without a chance.

However, Unión La Calera assimilated the blow and barely 180 seconds later returned the equalizer, after a cross by Matías Cavalleri and a faulty clearance by Tomás Guidara, who left the ball served to a perfect volley by Jeisson Vargas.

After this explosive start, they both sought to settle into the field of play and the defenses were settling down to leave the feeling that the match would go to rest in a draw.

However, in the 39th minute a triangulation between Federico Mancuello and Lucas Janson ended in a cross for Thiago Almada to define and put the result that, in the end, would be the decisive one.

In addition, Vélez sought to expand the advantage even with the income of Ricardo Centurión and Miguel Brizuela that refreshed the local offense.

Unión La Calera sought a tie mainly with Sebastián Sáez supported by the income of Andrés Vilches and Matías Laba.

The good performance of goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos and the solidity in both the aerial game and the level of the central defenders Lautaro Gianetti and Luis Abram were the keys to the victory of Vélez.

On the sixth and last day, Vélez will visit Flamengo and Unión La Calera to Liga de Quito.
